The device produces print objects according to the laser sintering process. Here
the print object is built vertically in layers. Each powder layer is sintered on the print
object layer immediately beneath it by heat treatment using a laser beam. The
typical thickness of a layer is 0.1 mm.
Polyamide powder (nylon) such as Sintratec PA 12 Black powder is used as the
raw material.
The print objects are high-strength and have a high degree of dimensional
accuracy.
The "Sintratec Central" print software, which is installed on an external computer,
controls the device and prepares the 3D model data (loaded from STL files) for the
printing process. The computer is connected to the device via a USB port.
The powder container, where the required powder is added, is inside the device on
the right. The print container is where the print object is built. There is a platform in
both the print container and the powder container, which can be moved vertically in
steps. Moving the platform in the powder container upwards by one step results in
a quantity of powder sufficient for the following print layer being made available.
The platform in the print container is simultaneously moved downwards by a
distance equal to thickness of one layer. The coater is used to move the available
powder in the powder container over the print object as a loose layer. The powder
is then sintered inside the contours of the print object on the base. Here the laser
beam is controlled in such a manner that the surface of the print object is efficiently
scanned and a complete fusion of layers occurs. After the final layer has been
sintered, the print object in the print container, which is surrounded by non-
consolidated powder, is available and can be removed after a cooling-down period.
For the purpose of filling powder and also for preparing a bed for the print object,
the platforms in the print and powder containers can be positioned using the
"Sintratec Central" print software.
To ensure an optimal sintering process, both the working section and the powder
layer in the print container must be pre-heated. The rear section is equipped with
infrared heaters which are use to heat the working section. The powder is heated
directly by 4 infrared heaters, which are fitted around the laser outlet opening. The
heating temperature is adjustable and is monitored; it is typically 150 °C. The
device is completely insulated against heat. The heating duration is 1 to 2 hours.

The non-consolidated powder around the print object, in the excess powder
container and in the collecting tray, which remains after the printing process has
finished, can be re-used after appropriate treatment.
