Symptom, possible causes and remedy
1) Excessive valve chatter
• Too large valve clearance.
• Weakened or broken valve springs.
• Worn rocker arm or cam surface.
2) Noise seems to come from piston
• Worn down piston or cylinder.
• Combustion chamber fouled with carbon.
• Worn piston pin or piston pin bore.
• Worn piston rings or ring grooves.
3) Noise seems to come from clutch
• Weak clutch shoe spring.
4) Noise seems to come from crankshaft
• Rattling bearings due to wear.
• Worn and burnt journal bearings.
• Too large thrust clearance.
5) Noise seems to come from the movable drive and
driven face
• Worn or slipping drive belt.
• Worn rollers in movable drive face.
