Registry File Deployment
The registry file created by the SCM export function must be properly deployed to the mobile computer. The order in which registry
files appear in the folder structure of the mobile computer is important. The function that processes .REG files is called "RegMerge".
RegMerge first looks for registry files in the \Platform folder and merges their contents into the registry. It then looks in
\Application\SCM and merges any found .REG files, and finally it looks in the \Application folder.
To understand the purpose of this order, consider the different types of registry files used on the mobile computer. Registry files
appear on the mobile computer from various sources:
• Factory Settings - Some .REG files are shipped in the \Platform folder from the factory. Registry settings built into the OS
image plus those found in \Platform define the default factory settings for the mobile computer. Do not modify or remove
these registry files.
• SCM Settings - The registry file generated by SCM must be placed in the mobile computer’s \Application\SCM folder. This
file represents user settings that override the factory defaults. An administrator uses SCM to create settings for groups of
mobile computers.
• CtlPanel Settings - Registry files generated using the CtlPanel’s Persist feature are automatically placed in the \Application
folder. These files represent user setting overrides for the single device where the changes were made.
Following this registry file processing order, RegMerge processes Factory settings first, then SCM settings, then finally CtlPanel
settings.
Exercise care when using the CtlPanel in combination with SCM to set options, as CtlPanel settings can overwrite SCM settings. For
best results, if using the SCM method, do not use the CtlPanel.
The current version of SCM does not support Scanner Settings, so use the CtlPanel method in this case.
