AnelectricclutchisusedtoengagethePTO.Theelectricclutchismountedon
theenginecrankshaftandengageswhencurrentisappliedtotheclutch.The
clutchalsoincorporatesamagneticbraketostopclutchrotationwhentheclutch
isde-energized.
TestingthePTOElectricClutch
1.Parkthemachineonalevelsurface,lowerthecuttingdeck,settheparking
brake,shutofftheengine,andremovethekeyfromthekeyswitch.
2.Unlatchthehoodandraiseit.

4.Unplugtheclutchelectricalconnectorfromthemachinewireharness.
Note:Foraccurateclutchresistancemeasuring,theclutchshouldbeat
approximately21°C(70°F).
Note:Beforetakingsmallresistancereadingswithadigitalmultimeter,short
themultimetertestleadstogether.Themeterdisplaysasmallresistance
value(usually0.5ohmsorless).Thisresistanceisbecauseoftheinternal
resistanceofthemultimeterandtestleads.Subtractthisvaluefromthe
measuredvalueofthecomponentthatyouaretesting.
5.Useamultimeter(ohmssetting),checktheclutchcoilresistancebetween
the2terminalsoftheclutchelectricalconnector.Thecoilresistanceshould
beapproximately3.0ohms.Additionally,checkthatthereisnocontinuity
betweeneitheroftheclutchwireconnectorterminalsandtheclutchframe.
6.Usetheaccessslotsintheclutchcover,measurethegapbetweentheclutch
rotorandthearmature(Figure165).Thegapshouldbe0.4mm(0.015inch)
atallthe3accessslots.Ifgapisincorrect,loosenortightenthe3locknuts
evenlytoachievecorrect,uniformgap.
7.Asanadditionaltest,apply12voltstotheterminalsofthePTOelectric
clutch.Theclutchshouldengage.Iftheclutchdoesnotengagewhen
voltageisapplied,replacethePTOelectricclutch.
8.Iftheclutchremovalisnecessary;refertoPTOElectricClutch(page6–78).
9.AfteryoucompletethePTOelectricclutchtesting,connecttheclutch
electricalconnectortothemachinewireharness.
10.Lowerthehoodandsecureitwiththelatches.
