Differential Mobility Particle Sizer
A higher resolution system that measures size distribution consists
of a CPC with an electrostatic classifier (EC) along with
interconnecting hardware and software. Figure 10-2 shows the
DMPS system in the underpressure mode.
The 3022A CPC has an advantage over the earlier Model 3020 CPC
because it can control the EC’s center-rod voltage directly from the
CPC. There is no need for an additional interface box.
To electrically connect the CPC to the EC, connect a cable from the
analog BNC
port on the back panel of the CPC to the BNC
connector on the back of an EC. Connect the computer’s interface
cable between the serial port of the computer and
the COM PORT on
the back panel of the CPC. Set the analog output to HOST (see
“Configuration” in Chapter 4). To run the DMPS system, follow the
instructions given in the menus of the DMPS computer program.
The tubing connections depend on the flowrate you select for the
electrostatic classifier. For monodisperse aerosol flows greater than
1.5 liters per minute, run the CPC in the high-flow mode. For
monodisperse aerosol flows less than 1.5 liters per minute, you
must run the CPC in the low-flow mode. In the low-flow mode, you
