Calibrating the CPC

This chapter gives a description of the calibration methods used by
TSI to calibrate the Model 3022A Condensation Particle Counter
(CPC).
In the realtime and live-time, single-particle-counting modes (below
10,000 particles/cm
3
), no calibration is required except for
flowrate. The particle concentration is simply calculated from the
flowrate, time, and number of particles that pass through the
sensing chamber.
Figure 7-1 shows the setup for calibrating in the photometric
calibration mode, the Model 3022A Condensation Particle Counter
(CPC) is calibrated according to two different methods. From 10,000
to about 500,000 particles/cm
3
, the standard method used is an
electrostatic mobility classifier and an aerosol electrometer. For
details of this calibration procedure, see Appendix C.
