Some thoughts about "resolution" & "DPI"
A problem is, that most of the images provided by customers are not available in
sufficient resolution and therefore have to be upscaled. For this it should first become
clear that the resolution of an image in DPI (Dots per Inch) must always be considered
relative to its size. The typical statement of customers "I have an image with a
resolution of 300 DPI. Can you please print it for me in 2 by 2 meter format?" is simply
not enough! The question is now, at which image size does the given image have a
resolution of 300 DPI? The size of the image in pixels says much more than the
specification of the DPI.
Also the question whether an image in a certain size can still be printed reasonably is
not easy to answer. It is almost always the case that scaling images is always a
compromise.
This picture has a size of 1220 x 920
pixel and therefore corresponds to 96
DPI at a size of 32 x 24 cm.
If this is now to be printed with a
resolution of 370 DPI at a constant size
(32 x 24 cm), then a clear pixelation will
show up with an upscaling without
application of mathematical
algorithms. The increase of the DPI
from 96 to 370 now has the effect that
the image no longer consists of only
1220 x 920 pixels, but of 4702 x 3546
pixels.
These additional pixels become visible
as "steps" and the print result would
rather be unacceptable.
