3.2.1 Attaching Markers
Patient Information
Inform the patient about the purpose of the registration markers. The patient should not remove
the registration markers.
Warning
Do not leave small children or disoriented patients with attached marker plates or
registration markers unattended.
Appropriate Marker Locations

Guidelines for Marker Placement
• Generally, you should attach 6 to 7 markers to ensure a sufficient number of markers for
registration
• Avoid areas with loose skin (to prevent skin shift)
• The markers should not obstruct the headrest
• The surgeon’s access to the markers in the OR should not be obstructed – therefore take the
patient’s position on the operating table into account
• To avoid ambiguities, place the marker plates asymmetrical to the midsagittal plane
Warning
Make sure that the position of the registration markers does not change (e.g., due to
fixation of devices during scanning, swellings of the anatomy, or intubation).
