7.1.5 Draping Ultrasound Adapters
About Draping
The draping procedure maintains the surgeon’s sterile field and provides a sterile barrier between
the patient and the unsterile ultrasound probe.
Always perform draping with extreme care so that the surgeon can perform ultrasound navigation
as required without compromising the sterile field.
Achieving Sterility
Ensure sterility by using the ultrasound adapter with sterile reflective marker spheres.
How to Test Draping Effectiveness
Drapes intended and cleared for use on a patient’s central nervous system can be tested for
compatibility with the Ultrasound Adapter Base and Ultrasound Adapter Array. For example, the
watertightness test according to ISO 11193-1:2008 which can be performed as described here:
Figure 54
Step
1. Connect the Ultrasound Adapter Base ② to the ultrasound probe ③.
2. Fill the drape with the enclosed ultrasound gel, pull it over the probe with the Ultrasound
Adapter ② and secure it with the enclosed rubber bands.
The Ultrasound Navigation Adapter Array ① can now be connected to the Ultrasound
Adapter Base ②, while the drape is between the Ultrasound Adapter Base ② and Ultra-
sound Navigation Adapter Array ①.
3. Disconnect the Ultrasound Navigation Adapter Array ① again and turn the ultrasound
probe ③ in the drape ④.
4. Reconnect the Ultrasound Navigation Adapter Array ①.
5. Rotate the Ultrasound Integration Adapter Array ① in such a way that it can be recon-
nected to the Ultrasound Adapter Base ② at least four times with different drape ④ posi-
tions.
6. Repeat this procedure with a second drape and perform step 2 with both prepared
drapes, one on top of the other.
