The orice, or hole in the spud, serves two purposes;
rst it controls the maximum amount of gas to the burner
and second it speeds up the gas ow as it enters the
burner venturi.
When the main burner gas leaves the orice it passes
through the air gap between the orice and the venturi
tube. The movement of the gas through the air gap
creates a vacuum, which draws air into the burner
venturi, where the air and gas are mixed. For proper
combustion the ratio of this mixture should be ten parts
of air to one part of gas.
The venturi tube is screwed into the bottom of the burner
base. The gas and air mixture is forced up the venturi
tube into the burner head.
Note: The bypass and simmer burner orices
are xed orices, and not adjustable.
When the valve is in the off position the hollow core,
in the center of the valve, prevents gas from owing
through either of the openings.
When the shaft of the valve is turned the hole and the
channel in the core moves over the openings in the
case of the valve. When the shaft is turn to the high
position the hole and the channel in the core are com-
pletely aligned with the openings in the valve case and
the maximum amount of gas is allowed to ow through
the valve.
As the shafted is rotated off a high position the hole
in the core is misaligned with a hole in the case and
gas ow is reduced. When the valve is turn to the low
position, the core sealed off the hole in the case, re-
moving the main gas supply from the burner. Gas is
still allowed to ow through the channel in the core to
the bypass and simmer orices. This allows the simmer
burner to operate, and the main burner to operate on
minimum ame. When the valve is set to the simmer
position, the core seals off the opening to the bypass
orice and the only gas that is allowed to ow is to the
simmer burner.
The main gas from the valve is connected by exible
tubing to the burner orice, mounted to a bracket un-
derneath the drip pan. The simmer burner gas from the
valve is connected by an aluminum tube to the simmer
burner orice mounted mounted to the same bracket
underneath the drip pan.
