Step 3: Verify VNX array software versions
IMPORTANT
!
If you have a Symmetrix array instead of a VNX array, do not perform this step.
A VNX array used with a VNX VG2/VG8 gateway runs various software packages.
You must verify whether the correct versions of the required packages are installed
on the array at this time. You must also verify that write cache is enabled on the array.
Note: Do not install the array software package NASBackend or CelerraService on VNX arrays
connected to a VNX gateway.
This procedure requires a computer with network connectivity to the array
management ports. You can connect your service laptop computer to the customer’s
network, or use the customer’s management workstation.
Note: Ensure the customer’s Ethernet switch ports that are connected to the VNX storage
processors are set to auto-negotiate. If they are not set to auto-negotiate, the installation may
fail. Solution Case emc79617 provides more information.
Note: All VNX gateways attached to the same VNX array must have unique network addresses
in the Initiator Record Host IP Address field in the Unisphere interface to ensure that the Host
display for those VNX servers appears correctly.
To verify the array health:
1. Check the front of the VNX array and its DAEs for amber fault lights.
2. Check each disk drive for an amber light. This indicates a fault and the disk might
need to be replaced. A faulted disk might disrupt an installation.
3. If you are using your service laptop, connect and configure it as follows:
a. Obtain an IP address from the customer for use on the service laptop. Connect
the Ethernet LAN port from the service laptop to any available port on the
customer's network that has connectivity to SP A on the VNX array.
b. Change your laptop network setting to the subnet and gateway used for the IP
address provided by the customer. Do not use an address already in use on the
network (see “Configuring the private (internal) LAN” on page 25).
You can verify the VNX array software versions by using either Unisphere or the
Navisphere CLI.
