30EX Vascular Testing Instructions
1. ANKLE BRACHIAL INDEX (ABI)
The Ankle Brachial Index is the ratio of the highest systolic pressure at the arm to the systolic
pressure at the ankle. This simple test is performed much like taking a standard blood pressure,
except that a Doppler is used instead of a stethoscope.
Take a blood pressure reading at the arm
1
. Connect the Doppler probe to probe connector 1 on
the right side of the unit, turn the unit on and press the
MODE button to select Arm/Leg pressure mode (the
ARM/LEG LED will be lit).
2. If not already selected, press the probe selection
button to select probe 1 for the Doppler probe.
3. Place a blood pressure cu around the patient’s arm
above the elbow. Connect one end of the tubing to
the cu and the other end to the ination inlet on the
front of the unit.
Apply ultrasound gel to the skin surface
Hold the probe on the artery at a 45 to 60 degree
angle against ow. Adjust the probe angle until best
sounds are heard and a steady waveform appears on
the LCD.
5. Once the waveforms are steady and the INF/DUMP
LED begins to blink, press the INF/DUMP or probe
button to activate the automatic cu inator. The
Smartdop
®
30EX will automatically inate the cu past
the point of pressure cessation, then slowly deate
the cu until waveform motion returns.
The systolic pressure is the point where the rst
Doppler sound is heard will be shown on the LCD.
At this point, the cu pressure will be dumped
automatically.
50
NOTE
If the LED on the INF/DUMP
button does not blink because
of low ow or arrhythmia,
you may press the INF/DUMP
button longer than 2 seconds to
manually inate the cu. Once
the cu is inated past the point
where waveform motion ceases
press the INF/DUMP button
again to stop ination and begin
deation. If you need to dump
the cu pressure, press the INF/
DUMP button a second time.
CAUTION
Use ultrasound gel. Other materials such as baby oil or cream may produce incorrect
sounds or damage the probe.
WARNING
The ultrasound gel included with purchase is non-sterile and should only be used
noninvasively.
WARNING
Discontinue use of ultrasound gel if an allergic reaction occurs.
CAUTION
The probe transducer tip is thin and delicate.
Please handle with care and use the probe cap
when not in use.
