running abnormally warm in time to prevent its burnout. These sights, noises, and
smells can be indicators of lack of lubrication, misalignment, or other potential
trouble. Keep up with all maintenance procedures to help prolong the life of all
equipment.
3.1 General Information
3.1.1 Cleaning
There are many benefits to cleaning:
• To allow heat to dissipate from motors and gearbox.
• To prevent wear on moving parts.
• To prevent binding.
• To foster proper operation.
• To detect minor problems before they become major ones.
• To encourage operating personnel to treat clean equipment with more care.
• To maximize the life of the equipment.
Any prescribed cleaning schedule should be modified as experience is gained.
Some areas need cleaning more frequently than others because of the nature of the
operation and environment. Therefore, good cleaning is always combined with
inspection.
3.1.2 Inspection
It is recommended that a general inspection that will ensure a thorough examination
of each component and assembly contained in the system be done at least once for
each thirty-day period of operation. The total value of inspection procedures is
determined largely by the consistency and regularity of the schedule. A fixed interval
of inspection must be established and obeyed. This is usually easier to accomplish if
a rotating system of inspection is used.
