2.2.4 General Operation
MDR accumulation conveyors are grouped into zones that are controlled either
locally by a control card or remotely using an I/O module. Several controllers are
networked to form a complete control system. Zones consist of MDR rollers that
drive several carrier rollers connected by O-belts. Zone lengths can be 24, 30, 36
and 48-inches. 48-inch zones have rollers on 4-inch centers.
MDR rollers drive slave rollers using polyurethane O-belts. Slave rollers can also be
driven by other slave rollers. The drive rollers can be installed at the roller surface or
below the roller surface, in the lineshaft position. If mounted in the lineshaft position,
the drive roller is underneath and perpendicular to the slave rollers it is driving. The
belts are twisted around each slave roller and connected to the drive roller.
All sections other than transfers, diverts, and merges have two options for control:
• Local control, which controls the zone without communicating to an external
network. Each control card receives input from the photo-eyes, controls when
and how the MRD operates, and communicates to both upstream and
downstream control cards through a Cat - 5 cable. This solution is a basic black
box solution with no knowledge of zone status. This is a low cost, simple
solution.
• Remote control, which controls the zone remotely by a PLC or PC
communicating with the control card through an I/O network (e.g., DeviceNet,
Profibus) and a B&R remote I/O module. One I/O module connects multiple
control cards and an X2X subnetwork to daisy chain the I/O modules together.
This is the most versatile method of controlling a zone and also provides the
most diagnostic information.
Transfers, diverts and merges must use the remote control option.
