Installing Superdome I/O Cards
The SPU comes from the factory with the I/O cards that the customer ordered already installed. However,
there may be times when you may have to add a card that was ordered after the original system was ordered,
or install a card that the customer simply wants to add as part of the installation. This section contains a
brief procedure on how to install a Peripheral Controller Interface (PCI) I/O card. Complete information
about I/O cards is available on the Web site (http://superdome.hp.com).
Selecting a PCI Card Slot
This section contains information on selecting the appropriate card slot for any supported PCI card.
Each 12-slot PCI card cage provides: eight card slots (0 - 3 and 8 - 11) for 1x or 2x PCI card types, and four
card slots (4 - 7) for 4x PCI card types. Thus, to distribute I/O traffic evenly through each 12-slot card cage:
• Load slower (1/2x) legacy cards alternately between empty slots 0 - 3 and slots 8 - 11. See Figure 4-5.
• Load faster (4x) legacy cards alternately between empty slots 4 - 5 and slots 6 - 7.
