2.10 Compression Force Test
2.10.1 Test Objective
To ensure the initial power drive compression force is within acceptable operating levels.
2.10.2 Frequency
• Initially at installation
• SEMI-ANNUALLY
• As part of an MEE
• Whenever reduced compression is suspected
2.10.3 Required Equipment
• Analog bathroom scale
Follow the guidance given in the "Mammography Quality Control Manual" (ACR, 1999) section procedure 7. Follow
the QC manual by your mammography X-ray unit manufacturer.
2.10.4 Procedure
Place the analog bathroom scale on the breast support table and activate the compression device using the power
drive. Record the measurement when the compression paddle automatically stops.
Follow the procedures given in the "Mammography Quality Control Manual" (ACR, 1999) section procedure 7. Follow
the QC manual by your mammography X-ray unit manufacturer.
2.10.5 Performance Criteria and Corrective Action
Performance Criteria: The maximum compression force for the initial power drive mode must be between 111 N
(25 lb. or 11.3 kg) and 200 N (45 lb. or 20.4 kg).
Corrective Action: Follow the guidance given in the "Mammography Quality Control Manual" (ACR, 1999) section
procedure 7. Contact your service representative of the mammography X-ray unit vendor if problems are unresolved.
The source of the problem shall be identied and corrective action shall be taken before further patient imaging is
performed.
2.10.6 Documentation
Record the results in the Table RT-S2 (TECHNOLOGIST'S MAMMOGRAPHY QC TEST SUMMARY: Monthly, Quar-
terly, and Semi-Annual Tests) or use the worksheets and forms referenced in the "Mammography Quality Control
Manual" (ACR, 1999) Radiologic Technologist section procedure 7.
