3.6 Average Glandular Dose
3.6.1 Test Objective
To determine the average glandular dose delivered for a particular object.
3.6.2 Frequency
• Initially at installation of the mammography X-ray unit
• ANNUALLY
• As part of an MEE
3.6.3 Required Equipment
• RMI-156 Phantom
• Calibrated dose meter
3.6.4 Procedure

From the previous Beam Quality test, make a note of the kVp and HVL (Half Value Layer) val-
ues.

Select the appropriate chart from the "Mammography Quality Control Manual" (ACR, 1999)
Medical Physicist Section pg 281-283, based upon target and ltration used in the Table MP-3
(Beam Quality). This chart will be used to enter the table value on the Table MP-5 (Average
Glandular Dose).

Position the RMI phantom in the center of the breast support table at the edge of the chest
wall. The phantom should cover the cells used for AEC.

Place the detector of the dose meter on the breast support table next to the RMI phantom. It
should be 4cm from the chest wall and not over the cells used for AEC.
