3.5 Radiation Output Rate
3.5.1 Test Objective
To measure the radiation output rate of the equipment.
3.5.2 Frequency
• Initially at installation of the mammography X-ray unit
• ANNUALLY
• As part of an MEE
3.5.3 Required Equipment
• Calibrated dose meter
• 4cm of PMMA (acrylic) phantom
3.5.4 Procedure

Set at 28kVp in the standard mammography mode (Mo/Mo) and expose long enough to
achieve 3 seconds.

Position the detector of the dose meter 4.5cm above the breast support table and centered
4cm in from the chest wall.

Position the paddle to come in contact with the detector. (On some units, a cassette must be
placed in the cassette holder to enable exposure.)

• Do not change the position of the detector during the measurements.
