AUTO Mode: The sonic auger sensor controls the
amount of material owing to the end gates by gauging
the amount of paving material in the extensions. It
detects material height and automatically turns the
auger on and off accordingly. The sonic auger sensors
are most often used at paving widths of nine feet and
above.
Connect the sonic auger sensor to its cable on the
screed and place the sensor in its adjustable screed
extension mount to operate. (Figure 4-46)

AUTO Mode: Press and hold the
pile height plus (increase) and minus
(decrease) buttons on the upper left
keypad to increase or decrease pile
height when operating in the AUTO
mode. These buttons also adjust
auger speed when in MANUAL mode.
Heating the ScreedHeating the Screed
Heating the screed and screed extensions helps
prevent hot mix from sticking to the cold screed plates
to produce a smooth, tight mat surface. Heat the screed
before paving and when the paver is idle long enough
for the screed to cool between loads. The 5300B
Compact Paver is equipped with an electric heating
system.
The electric screed heat system is heated by a
hydraulically-driven generator that powers the electric
heating elements. Blade heating elements in the main
screed and extensions cycle during heat-up to save
horsepower and fuel consumption while paving.
When the paver is in neutral, both sides of the main
screed elements heat. When you start to pave, the right
side heat turns off for 128 seconds while the left remains
on, then turns back on and the left sides turns off for 128
seconds. This “ip op” system helps take some of the
load off the generator for increased efciency.
The electric heat circuit breaker box is located inside
the left access door. (Figure 4-47)

NOTE: Lower the screed two inches off the ground
while heating to prevent cold air and wind
from affecting the heating process.
NOTE: Allow the screed components to heat 15
minutes before beginning to pave.
NOTE: You can set the screed directly onto a fresh
mat of hot asphalt while running the heating
system, allowing the heat of the asphalt to
help heat the screed plate.
