8.11 Replacing the Drive Motor, Gearbox and Encoder
Note that the drive motor, gearbox and encoder are supplied as a complete assembly and
it is recommended that these items are not separated from each other.
Remove the lower cover and the rear backplate. Also remove the vertical motor cover on an
LS2K5E or LS5S machine. Disconnect the encoder plug from connector P2 on the Main PCB
then disconnect the motor wires from connector P6 on the Motor Drive PCB.
Remove the 4 off M6 socket head bolts securing the motor mounting plate to the lower crosshead
then lift the belt and motor assembly out of the machine.
Note the orientation and position of the pulley on the motor shaft then loosen the socket head
screw in the pulley and remove the pulley. Remove the socket head bolts securing the
motor/gearbox assembly to the motor mounting plate then remove the motor/gearbox assembly.
NOTE THAT THE LS2K5E AND LS5S MOTOR/GEARBOX ASSEMBLY IS FITTED TO THE
MOTOR MOUNTING PLATE USING 1/4 UNC SOCKET HEAD BOLTS BUT THE MOTOR
ON THE 1KN MACHINES IS FITTED USING 6mm SOCKET HEAD BOLTS.
Fit the new motor/gearbox assembly to the motor mounting plate, ensuring that the sound
insulation material is fitted on the LS2K5E/ LS5S, then refit and correctly position the pulley.
Position the motor mounting plate below the rear of the vertical column then loosely refit the M6
socket screws to retain the motor/gearbox assembly to the machine. Fit the drive belt over the
leadscrew and motor pulleys. Ensure that the motor pulley is at the same height as the
leadscrew pulley. Tension the belt as shown above.
Reconnect the encoder plug to connector P2 on the Main PCB then refit the motor wires as
shown below: -
