Trenchingisthemostbasicbackhoeexcavatingopera-
tion.
Otherdiggingoperationsaremerelyvariationsofthisba-
sicfunction(llingthebucket,dumpingthebucketand
movingthemachineforward).
Whiletrenching,itisgenerallyimportanttomaintaina
leveltrenchbottom.Thisisaccomplishedbysettingthe
bucketatthecorrectangleofapproach.
Pullonthedipperlevertomaintainthecorrectcuttingan-
gleasthebucketiscrowdingin(1)applyinglightpressure
totheright.
Atthesametime,pullontheliftlever(2)torelievedown
pressureandkeepthebucketinthesameplane.
Continuethetrenchbymovingforward.Movingtoofarwill
requireexcessivedownpressurefordigging,plushand
clean-upofthetrenchbottom.
Itisbettertomovealesseramountthattomovetoofar.

Whenusingthebackhoeattachmentfordiggingon
slopes,ifpossible,positiontheattachmentuphill.How-
ever,ifthisisnotpracticable,usetheloaderorbackhoe
attachmenttocutalevelsurfaceintotheslopeforthe
uphillwheelandstabilizer,anddepositthespoilfromthe
slotontothedownhillsidefortheoppositewheeland
stabilizer.
Whendiggingalwaysdepositthespoilfromthetrenchon
theuphillside.
NOTICE:Whenexcavatingacrossaslopeitisnotpossi-
bletomakeuseoftheloaderbucketforaddedstability.
Donotoverloadthebucketandavoidswingingaloaded
buckettothedownhillsideoftheslope.
