TheAISfeatureenablesyoutoreceivecertaininformation
broadcastbyothervessels,andaddthemasatargetintheChart
andRadarapplications.
WithanoptonalAISreceiverconnectedtoyourmultifunction
display,youcan:
•DisplaytargetsforanyotherAIS-equippedvessels.
•Displayvoyageinformationbeingbroadcastedbythesetargets,
suchastheirposition,course,speedandrateofturn.
•Displaybasicordetailedinformationforeachtargetvessel,
includingsafetycriticaltargetdata.
•Setupasafezonearoundyourboat.
•ViewAISalarmandsafetyrelatedmessages.
Thisinformationisdisplayedintheformofanoverlayandadditional
dataisdisplayedinadialogboxonyourchartscreen,forexample:

TheAISsystemdisplaysotherAISequippedvesselsinthe
surroundingareaastriangulartargetsoverlaidonachartorradar
window.Upto100targetsaredisplayed.Asthevessel’sstatus
changes,thesymbolforthetargetwillchangeaccordingly.
Vectorscanbedisplayedforeachtarget.Thesevectorsindicate
thedirectionoftravelandrateofturnofthevesselandthedistance
itwilltraveloveraspeciedperiodoftime(COG/SOGvector).
Targetsdisplayedwiththeirvectorsarereferredtoas‘activetargets’
andarescaledaccordingtothesizeofthevessel.Thelargerthe
vessel,thelargerthetarget.Youcaneitherdisplayalltargetsor
justdangeroustargets.
HowAISWorks
AISusesdigitalradiosignalstobroadcast‘real-time’information
betweenvesselsandshorebasedstationsviadedicatedVHF
frequencies.Thisinformationisusedtoidentifyandtrackvesselsin
thesurroundingareaandtoprovidefast,automaticandaccurate
collisionavoidancedata.AISwillaugmentyourradarapplication,
asitcanoperateinradarblindspotsandcandetectsmallerAIS
ttedvessels.
Note:SmallervesselsdonothavetobettedwithAISandwhilst
itismandatoryforlargercommercialvesselstocarryAIS,itsuse
isnot.Therefore,youshouldnotassumethatyourmultifunction
displaywilldisplayALLvesselsinyourarea.Dueprudence
andjudgementshouldbeexercised.AISshouldbeusedto
complementradar,notsubstituteit.
AISSimulatorMode
Raymarinerecommendsthatyouusethesimulatortofamiliarize
yourselfwiththeAISfunction.Whenthesystemsimulatoris
switchedon(Menu>SystemSetup>Simulator),itdisplays20
AIStargetswithina25nmrange.Thesetargetsaredisplayedusing
theappropriateAIStargetsstatussymbol,andmovearoundthe
screenasiftheywererealtargets.
