Manual Card Entry
PIN Debit payments must be processed as card-present transactions, card data must be
read by the card reader and cannot be manually entered. This is a card requirement, not a
function of the point of sale equipment. Manual card entry is allowed on Credit, Gift and
EBT transactions if the reader is unable to read the card.
Visa or Mastercard branded Debit cards used for PIN Debit may also be used like credit
cards, with just a signature. If a Debit card presented for a PIN Debit transaction fails to
read, at the CARD ERROR message press CLEAR. You can now choose an alternative
payment method. Press the CREDIT function. Slide the same Debit card, if it fails to read
again, select CLEAR. The message “Enter Acct No” displays. You can manually enter the
account number and complete the transaction. The merchant may pay different card fees
for PIN Debit and signature Debit transactions.
Register a normal transaction. Press the appropriate CHARGE key. The message
“SLIDE CARD” displays:
