Messages
When the serial port AUTO setting is Y, the relay sends automatic messages to
indicate specific conditions. The automatic messages are described in
Table 6.3.
Access Levels
Commands can be issued to the relay via the serial port to view metering
values, change relay settings, etc. The available serial port commands are
listed in the Section 7: ASCII Command Reference. The commands can be
accessed only from the corresponding access level. The access levels are:
Access Level 0 (the lowest access level)
Access Level 1
Access Level 2 (the highest access level)
Access Level 0
The relay issues the following prompt when you establish serial port
communications:

This is referred to as Access Level 0. The relay recognizes only the ACC and
QUI commands at Access Level 0. Enter the ACC command at the access
level prompt:
=ACC <Enter>
The SEL-587Z goes to Access Level 1 [see ACC and 2AC (Access and
2Access) on page 7.2 in Section 7: ASCII Command Reference for more
detail] when you enter the ACC command.
Access Level 1
The relay issues the following prompt in Access Level 1:

The relay recognizes commands 2AC through TRI from Access Level 1. For
example, enter the MET command at the Access Level 1 computer screen
prompt to view metering data:
=>MET <Enter>

Condition Description
Power Up The relay sends a message containing the present date
and time, Relay and Terminal Identifiers, and the Access
Level 0 prompt when the relay is turned on.
Event Trigger The relay sends an event summary each time an event
report is triggered. See Event Report Triggering on
page 9.2 in Section 9: Event Reports and SER
Self-Test Warning or Failure The relay sends a status report each time
a self-test warning or failure condition is
detected. See STA (Status) on page 7.18 in Section 7:
ASCII Command Reference.
NOTE: In this manual, commands
you type appear in bold/uppercase:
SHOWSET. You need to type only the
first three letters of a command, for
example, SHO. Computer keys you
press appear in bold/brackets:
<Enter>. Relay front-panel
pushbuttons you press appear in
bold/uppercase/curly brackets:
{EVENTS}.
