Communications Protocols
SEL Fast Operate
SEL Fast Operate protocol supports binary messages to open/close circuit
breakers, and to control Remote Bits. The protocol is described in
Fast Operate on page 6.15.
SEL Compressed ASCII Protocol
SEL Compressed ASCII protocol provides compressed versions of some of
the relay ASCII commands. Explanations of those commands are included in
Section 7: ASCII Command Reference.
The SEL-587Z provides Compressed ASCII versions of some of the relay’s
ASCII commands. The Compressed ASCII commands allow an external
device to obtain data from the relay, in a format which directly imports into
spreadsheet or database programs, and which can be validated with a
checksum.
Modbus RTU Protocol (available on the rear port only)
Modbus RTU protocol provides binary multidrop communication with the
SEL-587Z. The protocol is described in Appendix D: Modbus RTU
Communications Protocol.
