6 Commissioning
This chapter describes the standard commissioning procedure for putting der GM35 Probe
Model into operation.
6.1 Preparations
6.1.1 Necessary qualifications and other prerequisites
The technicians and engineers who carry out commissioning are advised to attend training
sessions held either by SICK MAIHAK GmbH or a qualified sales partner. This course will
help participants to recognize and handle situations that require measures above and
beyond the standard procedures described here. In addition to carrying out commissioning,
SICK MAIHAK GmbH employees and trained sales partners are able to provide
recommendations regarding measurement operation and defining maintenance intervals on
the basis of specific plant conditions.
Standard commissioning procedure
Since every measuring system is configured at the factory for each specific application, the
standard commissioning procedure described in this chapter can usually be carried out by
qualified engineers or technicians without requiring special training. The following
prerequisites apply:
• The application conditions specified with the purchase order have not changed.
• A trained specialist at SICK MAIHAK GmbH or a SICK sales partner can be consulted if
questions arise that extend beyond the scope of the standard procedures described
here.
6.1.2 Overview
Once the general preparatory measures have been taken, which mainly involves checking
that the previous work has been carried out properly, a zero-point adjustment on a zero path
must be carried out for the measuring system. This can take place at the measuring point
or elsewhere, for example, in a closed room. The purge air units and then the SR unit with
measuring probe are commissioned at the measuring point. Finally, the evaluation unit is
switched on and checked. It can then be parameterized for special requirements.
6.2 Commissioning overview
‡ Consult the relevant personnel and their logs, and check the site to make sure that the
work described in the previous chapters has been carried out correctly and completely.

Prerequisites for commissioning the system correctly:
– The installation conditions match the requirements of the measuring system.
– A suitable flange with pipe has been installed for mounting at the measuring point.
– The purge-air unit (if required) and Evaluation Unit are installed and ready for operation.
