Introduction
The Model 4540 EGauge Combo Soil & Asphalt Density Gauge
uses the latest engineering, design, and manufacturing
techniques. This gauge uses a Backscatter mode in addition to
direct transmission method of measuring.
The gamma-ray method also known as the nuclear method
of measuring density of soil and soil-aggregate bases has
been approved by the American Society of Testing and
Materials (ASTM). The Model 4540 gauge complies with
ASTM D8167, Standard Test Method for In-Place Bulk
Density of Soil and Soil-Aggregate by a Low-Activity Nuclear
Method (Shallow Depth).
An additional gamma ray method, known as the nuclear
method, of measuring the density of asphalt complies with
the standard set by the American Society of Testing and
Materials [ASTM]. The model 4540 complies with ASTM
D2950 Standard Test Method for Density of Bituminous
Concrete in Place by Nuclear Methods.
Using the Model 4540 gauge, and the independent
moisture measurement method such as the Model 6760
Moisture Probe, you can precisely measure the moisture
content and dry density of construction materials. The
gauge features:
 Two measurement modes (Soil and Asphalt) for
precise compaction control readings in most
construction materials.
Use Soil Mode for moisture/density
determination in soil and soil-stone materials in
layers of four inches or greater.
Use Asphalt Mode for density determination in
asphalt or hardened concrete layers
 Over 30 functions to facilitate measurement of
compaction on construction materials.
 A backlit LCD screen to help you read the
display during night construction.
