Chapter 1
MZ Tow Tractor Section 1
2. Axle Drive System
An electric drive system powers the MZ Tow Tractor (refer to Chapter 5 for further details).
The electronic drive system consists of the following major components, integrated to
function as a single drive system:
(a) Transaxle. The vehicle’s electric drive motor is an integral part of the rear axle. It
serves as a structural member for the rear axle to provide direct-drive traction power.
(b) Controller. The Curtis controller determines motor speed and direction of rotation.
The controller receives direction commands from a directional control lever, speed
command from an accelerator assembly, and brake system signals from a brake
pressure transducer. The motor controller is located in a compartment on the left side
of the vehicle, adjacent to the battery bank.
(c) Electronic-Accelerator Pedal Assembly
(d) Informational Display (Gauge)
(e) DC/DC Converter for operation of the 12-volt electrical lighting systems
3. Battery
An industrial 80-volt lead-acid traction battery powers the drive system.
4. Lighting and Horn Systems
MZ electrical lighting systems include 12-volt headlights, brake lights, and back-up lights.
The vehicle’s horn is also a 12-volt system.
5. Hydraulic Steering System
The hydraulic system provides hydraulic pressure to drive the steering system. A single 72/80
VDC electric pump motor drives the hydraulic system.
6. Brakes
The brake system uses DOT 3 brake fluid in a split system to deliver hydraulic power to both
the front dry disc brakes and the rear wet disc brakes.
7. Chassis
The chassis has a 60" (1524 mm) wheelbase, welded unibody frame, and is supported by the
front leaf and rear coil suspension.
