12.2.2 Rod Source Replacement
Radioactive sources may be replaced only by competent and li-
censed personnel, in compliance with the official regulations, since
these persons have to work with an unshielded source for a short
time.
Therefore, they have to carry a pocket dosimeter indicating
the level of radiation, so that the actual radiation exposure
during work can be documented. Moreover, this work has to be
coordinated with the Radiation Safety Officer.
Prerequisite for this work is that the personnel is familiar
with the exact shielding construction; therefore, the respec-
tive drawings must be available.
Preparation
All necessary work has to be prepared such that it can be carried
out quickly, so that exposure to the unshielded source is kept to a
minimum. Using a drawing of the shielding, you should plan the
best procedure and have the following tools handy:
a) 2 pairs of pliers
b) large screwdriver
c) 1 screw M4
- Turn the shielding to position "CLOSED” and secure it.
- Have the transport shielding for the old source ready.
- Bring the new source in its transport shielding close to the
measuring location and open it such that the new rod source
can be taken out and the old one can be inserted as quickly as
possible.
Do not touch the source with your fingers to prevent a high partial
body dose. Make sure the source is not mixed up with the new or
any other source.
