2.3 Capacity Control
Capacitycontrolofthecompressorisachievedprimarilybyspeedmodulation.Whenunloading,thecompressor’s
firstactionistoreducespeedtoslightlyabovetheminimum(surge)speedforthepressureratiopresentatthetime.
Furtherreductionincapacityandanincreaseinshaft/impellerstabilitycanbeachievedbyclosingtheIGVs.These
arevariableanglevanesinstalledinthesuctioninletaheadofthefirst-stageimpeller.Theseguidevanesrestrictthe
refrigerantfromenteringtheimpellerinlet,aswellasimpartinga“pre-swirl”oftherefrigerantinthedirectionof
impellerrotationtoincreaseenergyefficiencyduringpartloadoperation.
