DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol)
DHCP refers to the function for dynamically allocating the IP addresses to the clients
(PCs). The former is referred to as DHCP client, and the latter is referred to as the
DHCP server.
The DHCP client will identify the DHCP server via broadcast. This means that the
DHCP server would have be positioned within the range where the broadcast can reach.
The DHCP server is enabled to deliver the information required for the TCP/TP network
such as the DNS IP address, the IP address for the default gateway, and the domain
name, etc. additionally to the IP addresses.
DNS (Domain Name System)
A structure for managing the correspondence between the IP addresses and the domain
names, and for providing name solution for any host connected to the Internet. The
hosts existing within the Internet implement communication by using the IP addresses.
However, IP addresses are mere lists of numbers, and are inconvenient for handling and
are difficult to remember; therefore they are converted into domain names using
alphabetical letters and numbers which can have meanings applied so that they are easy
to understand for the users when they implement communication. For example, users
using applications such as Web browsers and E-mail software will specify the addressee
server by using names such as the e-mail addresses and URLs, name solution will be
required for such cases.
The name solution provided by DNS is provided by the dedicated server called DNS
server, which searches for the corresponding IP address against the domain name
specified by the user from among the database where the correspondence between the IP
addresses and domain names are managed.
The range for which the DNS server can provide name solution for DNS is limited; the
DNS server itself will have to make an inquiry to another DNS server which is
managing the target IP address when necessary.
DMZ (DeMilitarized Zone)
In general, if externally disclosed services such as the Web, E-mails, or DNS are located
within the network, it would enable external intrusions to be made and therefore
invasions will be made to the internal network. In order to prevent from having such
intrusions, an intermediate security area between the external area and the internal area:
DMZ is to be established, and the Firewall between the DNS and the LAN will also
help to prevent from having the damage spread.
