e AVCHD format is a high denition digital video camera format used to record a
high denition (HD) signal of either the 1080i specication1) or the 720p specication2)
using ecient data compression coding technology. e MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format is
adopted to compress video data, and the Dolby Digital or Linear PCM system is used to
compress audio data.
e MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format is capable of compressing images at higher eciency
than that of the conventional image compressing format. e MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 for-
mat enables a high denition video signal shot on a digital video camera recorder to be
recorded on 8 cm DVD discs, hard disk drive, ash memory, memory card, etc.
Discs recorded with HD (high denition) image quality can be played back only on
AVCHD format-compatible devices. DVD-based players or recorders cannot play back
HD image quality discs, as they are incompatible with the AVCHD format. Also, DVD-
based players or recorders may fail to eject HD image quality discs.
