5.1 STARTING SYSTEM
C50M, C65M
W hen the m ai n sw i tc h is turned on and the start er
bu tt on d ep ressed, the el ectric current flows through
the co il in the magn et ic switch , energizing the coi l
and causing the plu ng er co re to be dr awn in to
close the main con t ac t.
This permits
ove r 1 OOA of cu rren t to fl ow f rom
the ba tt ery di rec t to the st arter to prod u ce the
ne
ce ssa ry tor que to tu rn over the eng in e fo r
starti
ng.
The sta rter armature speed is r educed by th e
planeta ry g ea r enclosed wi thin the sta rter. The cha in
further redu ces the sp eed and tran sm its the pow er t o
dr ive the cran ksha ft . In this w a y, the st art er to rque
is m
ad e to ro t ate the c ra nk sh aft. To preven t the
s
tar t er from being motor ized after the engine st arts,
an ov erru nn ing clutch is in corpora ted into th e A.C.
genera to r ro to r.
