E. MUFFLER CLEANING

The function of the muffler is to muffle the noise
of the exhaust gases as it is emi tted from the com-
bustion chamber. In the pr ocess, the carbon particles
in the gas accumulates on the muff ler and the diffuser
pipe . Excess ac cum ulat ion of the c arbon will restrict
the now of the exhaust gas, creating back pressure
which effects the engine perfo rmance by lowe ring the
po wer output.

Clea ning
a. R em ov e the diffuser p ipe loc k ing bolt and pull
out the diff u se r pipe (Fig. 6-39)
b. Top the pipe lightly to remove the c ar bon and
hen wash in solvent or gasoline (Fig. 6 -4 0)
The cl ogg ing of the diffuser pipe wi ll cause a
drop in the engine power output. A loo se
connection at the gasket joint will pr oduce
und es ir ea ble noi se fro m leaking exhaust gas.
SPOKE TORQUING
Riding with lo o se spoke will place on ununiform
loading on the rim os we ll as on the remaining spokes,
therefore , the spokes should be inspected frequen tl y
and
retorqued when they become loo se.
Raise
the wheel off the ground and check each
s poke for tightness, any spoke w hich are noticeably
loose should be torqued to the same value as the
remaining spokes so that the spokes are all of uniform
torque. Use the spoke nipple tool and t orquing
wren c h. (Fig. 6- 41)
G. BATTERY INSPECTION

and should be
repl enish ed per io dically. Whe n the
el e ctr o ly te le vel drop s to the point wh ere the pl ates
are exp os ed , it wi ll re sult in rapid di sc harge to the
battery. The battery , should always be m ai ntai ned
at the pro per elec tr o lyte l eve l. 1

a. Remove the batt ery box, disconnect the battery
c ab le from the batte ry, un fas ted the batte ry
band and r emove the batte ry. (Fig. 6- 42)
The standard battery used is the MBC 1-6.
