1. A li g -e~· of the " F" timi ng mark

" f marking on the flywheel to the timing mark
on
he crankcase. In this posit io n, check to
rna e su re that th e spark is produced across
the s park plug points. (Fig. 6- 6)
Perform this test by removing ond pl acing the
s park plug on top of the cylinder head.
2. Adjustment
Make the adjustment by loosening the contact
breake r lock screw.
0 When the ig nit io n timing is retarded, move
the contact breaker toward the right.
0 When the igni tion timing is advanced, move
th e contact breaker t oward the left.
3. Breaker point gop, 0.3 to 0.4mm (0.012-0.Ql 6 in)
max.
Im proper ignition timing will result in combus tion
to toke pl ace at the incorrect po int of comp re ssion,
making
it impossible to o bta in smooth cra nkshaft
rotation; the throttle grip will require greater
opening , consequently, the fue l consumption is
increased.
Results of retarded ignition timing :
( 1) D
rop in power ou tput.
(2)
Drastic increase in fuel consumption.
(3) Engine
ove rheats with a possibili ty of piston
siezure.
Re sults of advanced igni ti on timing :
( 1)
Produces knocking and drop in power output_
In severe cases, damage to piston, connecting
rod, crankshaft may result, therefore, periodic
inspection should be pe rform ed.
(2) U
pon comp l etion of the po int gop and ignition
timing adjustment, check for proper operation
of the spark advancer with a timing light.

(Use of Service Tester)
Checking the oper ation of the spark advance r with
a tachometer
( 1) Co nn ect th e battery power, place th e se l ecto r
switch
to " T iming".
(2) Insert the plug end with the red and white
parallel stripes of the timing light into thP.
receptac le marked " Timing" .
( 3) Sc r ew t he hexag onal connector , included wit h
the timing light,
on the t op of the spark plug
and after installing the rubber cap, attach the
hi gh tension cord of the timing light to the
conne cto r with the alligator clip.
(4) Position the switch on the ta chomete r to
"connect", insert the plug from the tachom ete r
int o the jack on the tester marked "Jack" _
The 6,000 rpm is r ead off the green zone of
the meter diaL (Fig. 6-9)
