5.1.6 Overspeed governor
The overspeed governor's function is to stop the elevator using
the safety gear assisted by
the machine brakes. The overspeed governor operates if the elevator car exceeds its rated
speed locking the governor rope, which is attached to the safety gear. The safety gear then
stops the elevator car. The governor is a mechanical device, so it is fully functional even
during power failures.
5.1.7 Safety gear
The safety gear is a mechanical safety device attached to frame of the elevator car. When the
elevator ca
r exceeds its rated speed and the governor locks the governor rope, the safety
gear firmly grips the guide rails and stops the elevator car.
5.1.8 Brakes
The brakes are electromechanical devices that prevent the elevator car from moving when
the car is a
t rest or power is cut off to the machine motor.
5.1.9 Guide rails
The guide rails are steel rails that guide the elevator car through the elevator shaft. Guide
rails are att
ached vertically to the steel shaft structure.
5.1.10 Drive belts
The belts connect the drive of the machine to the balancing weights and suspension ropes.
5.1.11 Suspension ropes
The suspension ropes provide the suspension
by connecting the elevator car to the balancing
weights and drive belt. Each rope is capable of supporting the elevator with the safety factor
according to the elevator standards.
5.1.12 Pit safety device
The pit safety device is used to provide safety space
for maintenance personnel below the
car. The pit safety device must be activated when entering the pit.
