5.2 GAIT ANALYSIS DEFINITION
Note: The names of these measurements are used in English, because the English terms are standard technical
Gait Analysis terminology. Terms such as Single Support, Double Support, Stance, Swing, etc. are well known
among professional; therefore these terms are not translated in any language.
The following are some useful definitions to explain the values displayed on the table with numerical
data.

The Gait Cycle begins when the heel of one foot touches the ground and ends when the same foot,
after having executed one step, is set down. The cycle begins with the Stance phase (the heel-to-
toe contact sequence of the foot) and continues with a Swing phase, where the foot is suspended
and proceeds in the air (on average the stance phase accounts for 60% and the swing phase for
40%).
