12 Integrated Stimulus Presentation
NIRx’ stimulus presentation and experimental timing software, NIRStim™ can be started from within
NIRStar 14.1 by clicking the Launch button in the NIRStar Trigger section of the main screen (Figure 48).
12.1 NIRStim Features
NIRStim is an easy-to use graphically operated environment for generating and presenting basic
psychophysiological stimuli, and for providing experimental timing and control (Figure 49). In summary,
its main features are
Graphical operation (no line coding)
Presentation of various stimulation materials: Text, Pictorial, Auditory (Sound)
Unrestricted programming of timing, order, duration and repetition of stimulation events,
including randomizing and jittering.
Generation of synchronization signals (i.e., ‘triggers’, ‘event markers’) through various hardware
ports
Direct event synchronization to NIRStar through software
NIRStim’s primary purpose is to provide a simple, turn-key solution to the user for testing,
demonstration, and training purposes. Nevertheless its capabilities are sufficient to allow the control and
timing of many basic psychophysiological experimental paradigms.
NIRStim is particularly well suited to operate in wearable settings with NIRSport: Running NIRStim on the
portable acquisition PC allows auditory stimulus or instruction presentation to the subject through
headphones while trigger signals are transmitted to NIRStar through software without the requirement
trigger generating hardware or trigger cabling.
