16.2.1 Master and Slave Concept
The software will automatically designate one instrument ‘Master’ and the other ‘Slave’. The assignment
of Master and Slave is relevant for the channel numbering and the connection of event-trigger cables.
Whenever a new NIRS instrument is connected to the control computer, the NIRStar instrument drivers
will automatically assign it an internal device number that will be permanently retained for this
particular instrument. This number will be preserved even after dis- and reconnecting the instrument,
and is independent of on/off powering cycles of the instrument or the computer. The device numbers
will also be preserved when upgrading to a newer version of NIRStar. Device number assignments will be
lost only when the NIRStar software, with all components including device drivers, is completely
uninstalled.
The instrument that is connected to the control computer first during the initial setup of the tandem
mode will be designated the ‘Master’ instrument. After the initial connection of the imagers to the PC
this assignment will be permanent, and any future order in which the USB connection is established will
be irrelevant.
If a single device has been used and is upgraded to a tandem configuration by adding a second
instrument, the original instrument will always assume the role of the Master.
Both instruments are synchronized within the NIRStar software, so no direct connection between the
devices is required.
