Ensure that the rotary knob (fig. 1,9) is plugged into one of the USB ports at the front
(fig. 1,7) or the rear (fig. 2,6) of the Phenom.
> A blue light should be visible on the base of the rotary knob.
Even when the blue light is visible, unplug the rotary knob and then plug it back into
the USB port to ensure that connection has been properly made.
Try one of the other USB ports.
Make sure some high contrast features are in the center of the viewing window.
Use auto contrast / brightness first, then auto focus. Refer to 4.6.1. ‘Adjusting focus’
and 4.6.2 ‘Adjusting brightness and contrast’
First perform an Auto focus when fully zoomed out (this will perform a full focus scan).
When working at higher magnifications, periodically perform the Auto focus again (this
w
ill perform a ‘fine focus’). Refer to 4.6.3 ‘Magnifying the image’.
Use manual focus and contrast controls to adjust the image. Some samples may not
work well in auto mode due to sample charging or other sample related interactions
with the electron beam. Refer to 4.5.1 ‘Adjusting focus’ and 4.5.2 ‘Adjusting
brightness and contrast’.
Focus Optical Image before loading to SEM. Refer to 4.5.1 ‘Adjusting focus’.
Adjust contrast and brightness manually. Refer to 4.5.2 ‘Adjusting brightness and
contrast’.
Make sure the USB Flash drive (fig. 1,10) is version 2.0.
Check that the USB Flash drive is not full. The Camera buttons ( ) and
StoreSysInfo button will be grayed out if there is insufficient storage space on the
USB flash drive.
Unplug and reinsert the USB flash drive into one of the USB ports at the front
(fig. 1,7) or the rear (fig. 2,6) of the Phenom.
If this does not work, insert the USB flash drive (fig. 1,10) into another computer to
verify that the USB flash drive is not damaged.
USB flash drives can be fully erased or reformatted from the Settings menu.
Refer to 5.6.1 ‘USB stick’.
It can take up to 5 seconds to recognize the USB Flash drive after insertion.
Try a different USB flash drive.
Re-insert the sample holder.
Clean contacts with a pencil rubber (eraser) or general purpose degreaser such as
Windex. Reinsert sample holder.
Place the sample holder, close the door (fig. 1,4) and touch the button (fig. 3,10).
Check that the seal is clean and centered around the sample holder.
No sample holder inserted (fig. 5,11) lights up when you start imaging without a
sample holder inserted.
Activate the sample holder. Refer to 4.3.1 ‘Activating the sample holder’.
Replace sample holder.
