MerCruiser-Checking V-Drive Rudder & Strut
Periodically check the
rudder and strut for damage
from hitting any submerged
object or from running
aground, on sand, etc.
Check the rudder for
straightness and tightness.
The rudder packing if
leaking into the hull can be
adjusted.
To tighten the rudder
packing first find the 2
nuts located above the
rudder shaft. While
holding the top
adjustment nut turn
the bottom jam nut
clockwise to loosen it.
Then turn the top
packing nut until the
drip stops.
Do not over
tighten as the packing
can be ruined.
Hold the
adjustment nut from
moving and tighten it
properly by turning
(counterclockwise) the
jam nut against the
adjustment nut. Check the rudder shaft for leaks.

RUDDER
MerCruiser-Checking V- Drive Shaft Seal
This unique shaft seal
system is water cooled and
eliminates the need to adjust
a packing nut to the correct
drip amount. It uses a hose
from the engine manifold to
cool the shaft via the seals
and exits the water through
the hull bottom. Periodically,
check the hoses to make sure there are no leaks.
For seal replacement call an authorized Regal dealer. Make
sure the shaft seal assembly is winterized properly.
