STERN DRIVE STEERING
Stern drive (outdrive) vessels use a rotary style steering
system. This system transfers helm mechanical energy to
the engine. There is a hydraulic steering cylinder with the
help of a steering pump which sends fluid force to the
stern drive steering arm changing the course of the boat,
depending on the direction the steering wheel is turned.
Since the steering system is the primary link for engine
control, it must be periodically inspected and maintained.
The hardware at both the helm and engine must be checked
regularly for tightness.

STEERING SYSTEM OVERVIEW
V-DRIVE STEERING
The V-drive vessel uses a hydraulic-mechanical steering
system. It includes a helm pump, hydraulic lines and fluid,
rudders, steering cylinder, tiller arm and various tie-bars.
The steering wheel features a smooth turning cycle similar
to that of an automobile.
Unlike a mechanical steering system with definite stops
from stop to stop the hydraulic system features relief
valves that allow the steering wheel to continue turning
after the steering cylinder has reached the end of its travel.
You will feel a slight increase in effort to turn the wheel
once the system has reached this position.
There are special hydraulic fluid requirements and filling
procedures for the system to operate sufficiently. Refer
to the operation and maintenance for further information.
