Principles of operation
These equations show that the ion selective electrodes do not measure the ion
concentration, but the activity of the ions. This activity is a criterion of the ion’s
ability to interact with other ions, in which each ion binds a proportion of its energy.
The ion concentration is calculated based on ion activity. The correlation is affected
by the total number of ions in the solution. Since sodium is the predominant ion in
whole blood and serum, the known value of the sodium concentration makes it
possible to ascertain and adjust for total ion effect and strength.
