72-10-12A STARTER AND STARTER ADAPTER.
TSIO-360-A,AB,D,DB. OPTIONAL ON TSIO-360 LB (See Figure 72-10-12A).
Refer to Service Bulletin M-74-17, or current revision as applicable.
A.
Remove attaching hardware (57, 58) and pull starter (56) from adapter (2) studs. Remove
and discard o-ring
(55).
B.
Remove retaining ring (13) using snap ring pliers. With proper size drift and soft mallet,
tap needle bearing
(7) driving bearing (12) worm shaft (a), spring (9), wormgear (ll), and
needle bearing
(7) out of starter adapter (2).
C.
Remove attaching hardware (34, 35, 36,

63)
and accessory drive adapter (22).
Remove screw (38), washer (37), bushing (31), gear (30), and gear (32). Remove and discard
o-ring
(21). Remove attaching hardware, covers and gaskets (45 thru 54).
Using snap ring
pliers, disengage retaining ring
(44) and slide
it
back on shaft
(43).
Press shaft
(43)
thru left
accessory drive pad opening. As shaft is pressed out, retaining ring
(44)
and gear (41) will
fall free inside accessory drive adapter for removal. Key
(42) should be removed with shaft
(43)

Remove oil seals (26, 27).
Bushings (24, 23) can be removed using an arbor press.
Remove gear
(40) and bushing (25).
E. Remove attaching hardware (59,
64)
and separate starter adapter housing (2) from
accessory case. Remove and discard gasket
(1).
F.
Install starter adapter housing (2) in a shielded vise.
Slide bearing
(39) off shaftgear
(19). Remove worm wheel gear (1 5), bearing
(14),
spring (16), and shaftgear (19) by turning
worm wheel gear
(15) counterclockwise and pulling outward simultaneously to release spring
(16).
G.
Install worm wheel gear (15) in shielded vise, bend back tab on tab washer (17) and
remove screw
(18) and tab washer (17). Turn flat spot on spring which was being held by
screw
(18) 180' on worm wheel
gear until it lines up with opposite
hole. Using a small
screwdriver through hole, pry spring outward until
it
is disengaged from worm wheel gear
(15). Separate worm wheel gear
(1
5), roller bearing
(1
4),
spring
(1
6) and shaftgear
(1
9).
