CYLINDER AND PISTON ASSEMBLY
A. With engine in the inverted position, remove attaching parts
(1, 2, 3),
covers
(4,
5)
and
gaskets
(7).
Position crankshaft so valve lifters of cylinder to be removed are on heels of
cam lobes and both valves are fully closed. Bend down ears of tab washers
(9)
clear of nuts
(8).
Remove nuts and washers
(8,
9),
rocker retainer
(lo),
shafts
(11),
thrustwasher
(12),
bushing
(13),
and rocker assemblies
(14, 15).
Withdraw pushrods
(16).
Repeat these steps on
the remaining cylinders.
B.
Push the pushrod housings

in towards the crankcase until the cylinder flange end is
clear.
Li
the cylinder end of the housing and withdraw from the crankcase. Disconnect and
remove drain tube assembly

Remove and discard seals
(23).
Disconnect spring

and
remove with baffle
(49).
C.
Rotate engine to upright position. Insure that piston in cylinder to be removed is in top
dead center position.
Remove flange nuts

Cradle cyiinder

in either arm and
withdraw
it
straight outward, catching piston with free hand as it clears cylinder to prevent
damage to crankcase.

Remove piston pin

piston

and rings

immediately after removing
cylinder

Remove hydraulic lifters
(41)
from crankcase. TCM recommends
100%
replace-
ment of hydraulic lifters at engine overhaul regardless of condition.

Remove and discard cylinder base packing

Use of a cylindrical wood block and a
lever type valve spring compressor is recommended to facilitate removal of valve springs
(35,
36)
and to prevent valves
(38, 39)
from dropping.
F.
Compress valve springs
(35, 36)
and remove keys
(33).
Use caution to prevent cocking of
keys
(33)
or roto coils
(34)
and scoring valve stems. Remove rot0 coils
(34,
springs
(35, 36)
and inner retainers
(37).
Hold the valve stems while lifting the cylinder from its support.
Lay the cylinder on its side and stone any nicks on the valve stems before removing valves
(38, 39).
G.
Remove piston rings

from piston

using caution to prevent scoring of
piston lands with ring ends.
NOTE.
. .
As pistons and cylinders are being removed, the piston to cylinder position should
be checked and recorded to insure that piston is placed back in cylinder
in
same position at
engine assembly.
Pistons have a raised part number on one side of the piston pin boss. This
number can be recorded as either
fwd or aft as applicable. Example; cylinder no.
4,
piston
PIN aft.
