Removing the timing belt and
sprockets
1. Set the cylinder #1 piston position to
TDC of the compression stroke by align-
ing “” marks
a
and
b
on the driven
sprockets, and the hole
c
on the retain-
ing plate with the notch
d
on the cylinder
block.
CAUTION:
Do not turn the drive sprocket counter-
clockwise, otherwise the valve system
may be damaged.
2. Loosen the drive sprocket nut

NOTE:
Use a deep socket

(M46) for this proce-
dure.
Do not turn the camshaft when loosening
the drive sprocket nut.
3. Disconnect the cooling water hose

4. Remove the bracket

, spring

, ten-
sioner

, and timing belt

from the
driven sprocket side.
5. Loosen the driven sprocket bolts

and
remove the driven sprockets
