1.1IPv6Overview
InternetProtocolversion6(IPv6)isanewversionoftheInternetProtocol.Thesignicant
changesfromIPv4toIPv6areasfollows:
lExpandedaddressingcapabilities
IPv6increasestheIPaddresssizefrom32bitsto128bits,tosupportmorelevels
ofaddressinghierarchy,amuchgreaternumberofaddressablenodes,andsimpler
auto-congurationofaddresses.Thescalabilityofmulticastroutingisimprovedby
addinga"scope"eldtomulticastaddresses.Andanewtypeofaddresscalledan
"anycastaddress"isdened,usedtosendapackettoanyoneofagroupofnodes.
lHeaderformatsimplication
SomeIPv4headereldshavebeendroppedormadeoptional,toreducethe
common-caseprocessingcostofpackethandlingandtolimitthebandwidthcostof
theIPv6header.
lImprovedsupportforextensionsandoptions
ChangesinthewayIPheaderoptionsareencodedallowsformoreefcient
forwarding,lessstringentlimitsonthelengthofoptions,andgreaterexibilityfor
introducingnewoptionsinthefuture.
lFlowlabelingcapability
Anewcapabilityisaddedtoenablethelabelingofpacketsbelongingtoparticular
trafc"ows"forwhichthesenderrequestsspecialhandling,suchasnon-default
qualityofserviceor"real-time"service.
lAuthenticationandprivacycapabilities
Extensionstosupportauthentication,dataintegrity,and(optional)datacondentiality
arespeciedforIPv6.
