Staticmulticastroutesareusedforforwardingmulticastpacketsthroughaspecicpath
insteadoftheoptimumpathoftheunicastroute.
Staticmulticastprovidestheoutgoingandincominginterfacesintheuser-congured
multicastroutingtable.Amulticastforwardingtableisformedinaccordancewiththe
congurationofusers.Ifastaticmulticastrouteandadynamicmulticastrouteexist
concurrently,thestaticmulticastroutehasahigherpriority.Thelogicalpositionofstatic
multicastisequaltoPIM-SMandPIM-DM.Itcanbeunderstoodasaspecialmulticast
routingprotocol.
Staticmulticastroutesservethefollowingtwopurposesinaccordancewithdifferent
applicationenvironments:
lChangingRPFroutes
Ingeneral,multicasthasthesamenetworktopologyarchitecturewithunicast.
Multicastdataistransmittedthroughthesamepathastheunicastdata.Astatic
multicastroutecanbeconguredforchanginganRPFroute,sothatatransmission
pathdifferentfromthatofunicastdataiscreatedformulticastdata.
lMakinganRPFrouteuninterrupted
Whenaunicastrouteisblockedinthenetwork,data(includingmulticastdata)cannot
beforwardedbecauseofnoRPFroute.AnRPFroutecanbegeneratedbyconguring
astaticmulticastroute,sothatamulticasttableentryiscreatedtoguidemulticastdata
forwarding.
MulticastroutingprotocolsusetheRPFcheckmechanismduringcreationofmulticast
routingentriestoensurethatmulticastdatacanbetransmittedthroughacorrectpath.
Thiscanalsoavoidgenerationofloopsduetovariousreasons.
