PIM-SMIntroduction
PIM-SMismainlyusedinthefollowingsituations:
lGroupmemberssparselylocateinarelativelylargescale.
lThenetworkbandwidthresourcesarelimited.
PIM-SMdoesnotdependonaspecicunicastroutingprotocol.PIM-SMassumesthat
allroutersonasharedsegmentdonotneedtosendmulticastpackets.Theroutersonly
canreceiveandsendmulticastpacketsaftertheyrequesttojoinamulticastgroupon
theirowninitiative.PIM-SMadvertisesthemulticastinformationtoallrouterssupporting
PIM-SMthroughanRP .InPIM-SM,arouterjoinsorleavesthemulticastgroupexplicitly.
Thisreducesthenumberofpacketsandthebandwidthusedbythecontrolpackets.

PIM-SMsendsmulticastpacketsbyusingasharedtree.Asharedtreehasacenterpoint
thatisresponsibleforsendingpacketstoallthesource-sendingendsinthemulticast
group.Eachsource-sendingendsendspacketstothecenterpointalongtheshortest
path,andthentakesthecenterpointastherootpointtodistributethepacketstovarious
receivingendsofthegroup.
ThegroupcenterpointofthePIM-SMiscalledtheRP .TheremaybeseveralRPsina
network,butthereisonlyoneRPinamulticastgroup.
AroutercanobtainthelocationoftheRPintwoways.
1.ConguretheRPmanuallyandstaticallyontheroutersrunningPIM-SM.
2.PIM-SMv2obtainsthelocationthroughthecandidateRPadvertisement.The
candidateRPwiththehighestprioritybecomesaformalRP .
InPIM-SM,someroutersrunningPIM-SMaremanuallysettoworkascandidateBootstrap
Router(BSR).ThecandidateBSRwiththehighestpriorityiselectedastheformalBSR.
TheBSRisresponsibleforcollectingthecandidateRPinformationonthemulticastrouters
