overtheIPv4networkintunnelmode,wherethenodesunderstandbothIPv4
andIPv6.
Thehigh-order80bitsofthesetwokindsofaddressesareallsettozeros,and
thelow-order32bitscontaintheIPv4address.Ifthemiddle16bitsofanaddress
aresettoFFFF ,itindicatesthatthisaddressistheIPv6addressmappingtoIPv4

forwardtheseaddresses.Itcanneitherpreventtheseaddressesfrombeing
forwarded,nordistinguishtheseaddressesfromothervalidIPv4addresses.Itis
comparativelyeasiertomakecongurationsforaroutertoenableittoforwardthese
addresses.
Toimplementthisfunction,IPv6allocatestwodifferentaddresssegmentsfromthe
globallyuniqueInternetspace.Table2-4isoriginatedfromRFC,indicatingthe
